The Vignelli Canon

Massimo Vignelli has published an amazing 96 page book on better understanding typography in graphic design. So amazing! And even better, the book is available for free online in PDF format. Massimo, you are the man!!

House Industries: Letters & Ligatures Show

For those of you in Los Angeles, Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Gallery is hosting an exhibition of House Industries work, one of my all time personal favorites.

From Subliminal Gallery’s website:

For Letters and Ligatures, House Industries conveys a single, yet complex philosophy: visual nomenclature fuels language, facilitates communication, and forms the basis of a civilized society. The written language strings together letters, words, and sentences, conveying the innermost thoughts and ideas that human beings communicate to the outside world. It is tied to our primitive nature, governing our individual choices and observations, our collective socio-anthropologic history. At House Industries, the dedicated collective of artists figure if these symbols of syntax hold such an authority, “they might as well look good.”

Parking Garage Typography.

Check out this amazing way-finding-system for the Eureka Tower Carpark in Melbourne. The distorted letters on the wall can be read perfectly when standing at the right position. This project won several international design awards and is the brainchild of Axel Peemoeller. Brilliant!

Stop and think how much typography is a part of your daily life... emails, text messages, newspapers, websites, signage, menus, you could go on forever. There are endless style options you can choose from; script, modern, distressed, type writer and so on and on and on.

Cameron Adams understands the importance of the typographer and his curiosity of their personal handwriting led him to ask a number of prominent typographers to send a scan of their handwriting. He published the results on his website and its so intriguing.

Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces

Designer James West of Create/Reject recently completed a new project to help provide aid to victims of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar on May 2, 2008. West assembled a small book which features, as the name suggests, 'Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces'. Some of the biggest names in graphic design and typography participated, doing their part to help out. 100% of the cover price goes to UNICEF's Myanmar Cyclone Children's Appeal.
