Manetone Pantone Painting

London’s The Partners Design Agency created a reproduction of Édouard Manet's 'Bar at the Folies Bergere' made entirely of old Pantone chips.
Over 5,000 unused chips were painstakingly colour matched and and stuck down over four long nights. The piece was dubbed ‘manetone’.
I love ALL things Pantone.

It's official, with a pull of Captain Fritter this afternoon (with the help of master BambooZoo puller Tasha Foote), Mark and I have a full set of the BambooZoo!!! It's been a long time coming and this is the first full set of a blind box toy that we have collected. (OK well, we do still need the white Miss Mishka chase, but who's counting?)

We still have BambooZoo left at Hero and the final case on it's way (should be here tomorrow)!!! Come get some before they are gone for good, you'll fall in love with them too, I just know it.

Sagmeister: Life So Far

I am a HUGE fan of Stefan Sagmeister's, the more I read his books and interviews with him, the more that feeling is amplified. Stefan's approach to design, running a small studio and our industry in general, is a great influence of mine. Our friends over at Behance sat down with the 'master on remaining small, taking a human approach, and life lessons', you can read the whole interview here.

AND, (and this is a huge and super awesome "and") Stefan Sagmeister will be speaking here in Buffalo on July 16, during TypeCon2008, and Hero was asked to do the official poster for the event, so keep an eye out for it next week around town, and we will have copies available on our website after the event. Get your tickets here. Definitely go over to Sameister Inc. as well.

I am more excited about seeing Sagmeister live, than any band I have seen in the last 5 years!!

Paul Budnitz: Connoisseur of Cool

Photobucket

What did you want to be when you were growing up? I want to be Paul Budnitz, and by most societies standards I'm considered what you'd call a full grown man. I have no reason to complain, I have an awesome job, it's just...well...Paul Budnitz's job as founder and genius behind Kidrobot, could kick the shit out of your job in a hands-down, no mercy, meet me behind the gym at 4:00 after school kinda' way.

He sits down with our friends over at Behance to discuss the nature of his business, and how our increasingly globalized way of life has turned a sub-culture into mainstream culture.

Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces

Designer James West of Create/Reject recently completed a new project to help provide aid to victims of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar on May 2, 2008. West assembled a small book which features, as the name suggests, 'Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces'. Some of the biggest names in graphic design and typography participated, doing their part to help out. 100% of the cover price goes to UNICEF's Myanmar Cyclone Children's Appeal.

Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy at the Met

When I was in NYC at the beginning of June, I had the pleasure of catching the Superheroes exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was a beautiful collection of costumes and couture, and to see the actual costumes that the actors have wore during filming was incredible (Michelle Pfeiffer must be TINY, that cat woman suit was very small).

From The Met's website:

The symbolic and metaphorical associations between fashion and the superhero are explored in this compelling exhibition. Featuring movie costumes, avant-garde haute couture, and high-performance sportswear, it reveals how the superhero serves as the ultimate metaphor for fashion and its ability to empower and transform the human body. Objects are organized thematically around particular superheroes, whose movie costumes and superpowers are catalysts for the discussion of key concepts of superheroism and their expression in fashion.

If you are in the New York area, before September 1, definitely get to the met and check it out.

One Poster at a Time

We're back from Toronto and despite dealing with Canadian Border Patrol idiots (who stole our driver's licenses), and our bikes folding up on us countless times, we enjoyed ourselves. The event needs some work as we were one of 6 poster designers at what felt like a mini Flatstock...but anyway, check out these pics of our booth and of Mark in cool guy mode.

Karacho's Karakami Woodblock-printed Paper

Established in kyoto in 1624, Karacho is Japan's only ‘karakami’ maker (woodblock-printed paper). Still in operation today, the Karacho workshop has been directed by members of the Senda family for 12 generations, preserving a Japanese tradition. The Sendas are the custodians of 650 hand-carved wooden blocks, made over
the centuries and they still use them to produce the karakami paper for which karacho is world famous.
some blocks are more than 200 years old - the oldest (with a checkered pattern of chrysanthemums), dates back
to 1792.
