Barack Obama’s Fifty State Strategy

Michael Bierut designed a poster for the Democrats’ Artists for Obama initiative. The 40 × 26 inch poster features a new name for each of the fifty states, each set in a bright color in the candidate’s now familiar Gotham typeface. “The poster can be interpreted as both arrogant and silly, and I doubt the campaign is eager to promote either of those characteristics,” concedes Bierut. “Although I think it’s fun.” Evidently others do, too: a print of the poster raised $625 at a silent auction to benefit the AIGA at the organization’s annual Design Legends Gala last month.

It's so refreshing to see a simply designed poster for election time, without the usual patriotic themes and colors.

Mad Men Illustrated

There was a Drive By at Hero today.

Two of the dudes from Drive By Press came by Hero today with Abbey from Aesthetic Outburst, to say 'Hey', to check out our shop and to pick up a few prints. Drive by Press was created in 2005 when two artist and printmakers, Greg Nanney and Joseph Velasquez, met in graduate school and made it their mission to share their enthusiasm for printmaking with audiences everywhere. Before they could start, the two artists sold their art, pawned their guitars, amps, and all else but their souls in order to buy their printing press. They loaded the 600 pound 14th century style machine in the back of their vehicle and took off across the country and have been on the road ever since. The two, dubbed kings of DIY printmaking, have now traveled over 100,000 miles spreading ink and their style of guerilla art making at events across America.

After setting up at the University at Buffalo yesterday and on their way to Brockport, we got a chance to meet them and talk about what they were doing. Not only do they travel to Universities and set up demos but they have also gone on tour with quite a few bands including Spoon, BRMC, Chromeo, Louis 14th, Dark Angels, White Rabbits, The Walkmen and more, printing their designs while you wait at the shows. Customers are able to interact with the DBP during the printing process, selecting their own combination of color and placement of the designs. This way each guest gets to help create their very own piece of one-of-kind wearable art.

Such a cool concept. We wish those guys wonderful travels and we can't wait to run into them again soon. Read more about Drive By Press and you can purchase tees on their site as well.

Nerdbots: Found object robot sculptures for your inner nerd.

Oddly obsessed with all things robot, married couple Nicholas and Angela from Kansas City, Missouri, decided on a whim one day to do nothing other than to build one themselves.

After piecing together parts found at their favorite antique and thrift stores, they created their first robot friend. Since that first day, Nicholas and Angela have added many fabulously geeky robots to their beloved robotic collection.

I am absolutely in love with robots myself, and these just take that to a whole new level. I think I want to adopt Drip or Compacto. Which would you adopt?

Came across this image while looking around on Flickr for some reference photos. It's a package to welcome your new neighbors to the neighborhood from the 1960's. I wish I had more information about this product and where it came from - it is just so sweet.

Created by the guys over at Brazil’s Meninos design (the same guys who make these awesome hard drives), these icon coasters are a great gift for any iPhone addict. All your favorite applications are there, from Maps to Calculator, from iPod to Settings. Ah, Settings.

ach coaster measures 85mm square (about 3.34″) and is made from sturdy MDF plywood, then wrapped with a premium vinyl decal and durable varnish to protect the design. A thin rubber layer on the bottom keeps the coasters from slipping around.

Sets of 16 coasters retail for $60 USD over at the Meninos online shop.

Nike Sportswear in Mexico City

Nike Sportswear has hit Mexico City and to kick off the campaign, Nike invited 8 artists to participate by creating works of art for the inauguration of NSW in the capital of Mexico. The international lineup includes: 123Klan, Bigfoot, Carlos Ramos, Jason Maloney, Jesse Reno, Joe Ledbetter, Tixinda, and Yurievi, the colorful posters created reflect bits and pieces of Mexico’s culture. All the works also feature a slogan that reads, “This is Sportswear.” Another interesting tidbit of information is that according to Comunicadores is that the artists were only given a one day prior to the inauguration to create the presented works.
