Pantone Nesting Dolls

These have been floating around the internet for a few months now, and I still can't seem to find them for sale, so they must just be a concept project, but, designer Yaroslav Rassadin re-imagined a 120 year old traditional handicraft from Russia, the matryoshka.

The Matryoshka, or Russian nesting dolls, date back to 1890. Traditionally hand painted with ornate detailing and a dynamic range of colors, Rassadin’s take on the classic Russian nesting dolls was inspired by a combination of the “Pantone matching system and UFO minimalistic styling.” His work has been described as “emotional, minimalistic and technological.”

Nike "Beautiul Losers" Dunk Collection

To commemorate the Beautiful Losers release, Nike’s Sportswear’s JESSE LEYVA has also created a series of 22 Beautiful Losers Dunks emblazoned with iconic stills from the movie using the company’s new high-resolution digital printing process. Says Aaron Rose of the project, “We went back to the documentary and pulled frame stills of what we felt were key moments in the narrative. We used these moments to tell the Beautiful Losers story using the shoes as a medium, with the end result being a collection of works of art.” Viewed together, the shoes reflect the overall narrative of the film, and after being exhibited at the NYC and LA “Make Something!” workshops, two sets of the shoes will be auctioned off with proceeds donated to the Children’s Aid Society.

"Technical difficulties didn't deter M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel from plugging on ahead, even if that meant plugging in an electric guitar instead of an acoustic guitar. And then Newport's infamous rain came down hard. But that didn't stop them, either, nor did it prevent special guest appearances by Jim James and Becky Stark."

Beautiful Losers - The Movie US Premier

BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.

Check out this amazing way-finding-system for the Eureka Tower Carpark in Melbourne. The distorted letters on the wall can be read perfectly when standing at the right position. This project won several international design awards and is the brainchild of Axel Peemoeller. Brilliant!

WHAT: This B.U.D.'s for You. Hero is hosting a custom toy show featuring one-of-a-kind customs from over 30 artists from all over the world. The figure that is being customized is the 9" Blow Up Doll from Jamungo (as seen above) and each custom toy will be available for purchase. They will be available online after the first week of being on display, so if you are hoping to get a custom from a certain artist, you will want to be at the opening.

WHEN: October 24 - December 23, 2008. The opening reception is Friday, October 24 at El Museo directly next door to Hero. The show will only be on display at El Museo for the night of the reception (Hero will still be open next door) and the show will move over and remain on display at Hero from October 25 - December 23.

WHERE: Opening reception is Friday October 24 is at El Museo, 95 Allen Street, Buffalo NY 14202 the collection will be on display for duration of the show at Hero Design Studio + Boutique at 93 Allen Street.

WHY: This B.U.D.'s for You was organized to spotlight the phenomenon of custom designed toys and the artists creating them. We are featuring seasoned toy designers, gigposter artists, fine artists, illustrators, tattoo artists, musicians, etc. There will be local artists as well as international artists. Posters for Change

Graphic designer Max Erdenberger created the dazzling seizure-inducing animation in Gnarls Barkley’s “Run” video, writes the always-enlightening art & design blog Viewers Like You, and just released a series of beautiful posters promoting environmental responsibilty.

Originally commissioned by eco-clothing brand NAU’s philanthropic arm, Partners for Change, the posters never saw the light of day until Erdenberger came up with a unique solution to a very modern problem: how do you justify the unavoidably copious carbon emissions of a cross-country move?

“I already pay about $400 a year to make my family a carbon neutral family,” says Erdenberger, who recently moved 950 miles from smoggy L.A. to the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. “The move is an especially nasty polluter.” So the designer decided to dust off his eye-popping eco-loving posters and sell them to fund the offset of his recent carbon-emission shopping spree.

“The carbon offsetting I will do with the proceeds involves calculating how much carbon is generated while transporting all our stuff in a truck, flying our family of 3 in a jet, and transporting both of our cars on the back of a semi truck. Then, selecting a organization that funds the planting of trees, and promoting alternative energy.”

The series of five beautifully designed posters are available for purchase on imagekind.com, with a plethora of size and paper type options to display your devotion to ecological sustainability (and good graphic design!) however you see fit. An Eye For Annai

WOW!! This is such a beauty!! Great illustration work! This film was done by Jon Klassen and Dan Rodrigues in their third year at Sheridan College's Classical Animation Program. Everything is hand drawn and animated. They coloured the animation digitally, and the backgrounds are a mix of traditional and digital. Klassen played the recorder for the soundtrack, and the jazz music near the middle is from Louis Armstrong's "Jeepers Creepers". The whole film comes in at just under 5 minutes long, and it's totally amazing.
